2. Nutrition encompasses the relationship between the nutrients that are eaten, digested, and absorbed and the way they contribute to growth and health. A child’s diet, or foods and beverages consumed to nourish and support the body and its processes, must meet the child’s nutritional demands during the later years for the child to grow appropriately. 

    4. Health and well-being are founded on the prevention and treatment of illness, yet many children continue to have insufficient access to basic health care services. Current efforts focusing on ways to address this issue include: 1) identifying the indicators of well-being, 2) exploring disparities in health care, 3) understanding the role of children’s mental health, and 4) addressing the significant health concerns of early childhood students.

With less time and opportunity for children to play, it is crucial for those of us in early childhood education to keep focused on what we can do to encourage and support play in our daily programs.  There are developmental stages of play first identified by Erik Erikson in 1932 and they include:  1) unoccupied behavior, 2) onlooker play, 3) solitary play, 4) parallel play, 5) associative play, and 6) cooperative play.
