The part of connective tissue that is outside of the cell is called the extracellular matrix. Fibroblasts are the cells in one type of connective tissue, which is called connective tissue proper. Fibroblasts make and then secrete the three types of protein fibers, which are elastic fibers, collagen fibers and reticular fibers. Elastic tissue is one type of connective tissue proper. The number of elastic fibers outnumber the collagen fibers in this tissue, giving it a springy, resilient property that can withstand cycles of extension and recoil. One location of elastic tissue is in the walls of large blood vessels, such as the aorta, which exit the heart.
