This garrison was the site for the first battle of the Civil War.  Located off the Charleston coast, the garrison was bombarded by P.G.T. Beauregard on April 12, 1861.  The Confederates took the site in less than two days.  The Confederates would occupy it for nearly four years, but they would abandoned it before General Sherman captured Charleston.
