[BLANK-1] was a general during the late Roman Republic and a fierce ally of Julius Caesar. After Caesar’s assassination, he joined the Second Triumvirate and successfully fought against Caesar’s enemies. His marriage to Cleopatra VII, and his wedding gift of a massive tract of Roman land, tarnished his reputation among the Roman people. He had a falling out with another member of the Second Triumvirate and fought a bloody civil war against him. After his and Cleopatra’s forces were beaten at the Battle of Actium, he and his wife realized they could not win the war and they committed suicide. Their deaths (and the ascension of his opponent to the title of Emperor Augustus) marked the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire.

[BLANK-1] was founded after the defeat of the Philistines ca. 1025 B.C.E. Despite being one of the weaker Mesopotamian societies in terms of political, economic, and military power, it was nonetheless extremely important due to the foundation of Judaism – the first truly monotheistic religion. After the death of three powerful rulers (Saul, David, and Solomon), this kingdom was divided in half, with Israel in the North and Judah in the South. Israel was quickly defeated by the Assyrians around 722 B.C.E., but Judah persisted until a Babylonian invasion during the sixth century, B.C.E. Although the political institution never recovered, the Jewish faith persisted and informed other Abrahamic religions later on, including Christianity and Islam.
