A 72-year-old woman has been admitted to the medical unit with an acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The nurse completes the assessment and notes that the blood pressure, pulse, and respirations are slightly elevated, and the oxygen saturation via pulse oximetry is 86%. Upon auscultation, the nurse notes that the patient has this loud, high-pitched sound that is obvious on expiration, especially end-expiration.
