Consider the differing definitions of motif in the lessons. In its broadest sense, it is a recurring element in work of literature. Some people further define a motif as a symbol that repeats throughout a work of literature. Others consider it to be a broader pattern of related symbols or plot developments that help develop central themes. One example of this is the motif of the color green in The Great Gatsby. There is a series of different symbols that all happen to be green that work together to reinforce one of the book’s themes–that the American Dream is unattainable. Another example is the motif of the futile search in the novel 2666 as a pattern that helps illustrate one of the main themes of the book, which is that “art always escapes critics’ efforts to understand it” (“Motif” 4). In this example, the motif is established not through symbol but through plot: there are three separate searches that occur in the book, all of which prove to be futile. This repeating pattern of the futile search in general serves to reinforce the notion of the futility of critics trying to understand art. Identify one (1) motif from Ruined, indicate which definition of motif you used, and show examples of how this motif is developed in the play.
