We considered Plato’s story of the “Ring of Gyges.”  Gyges, who finds a magical ring which allows him to become invisible chooses to use the ring to steal, seduce, abuse and kill.  Because he is invisible there are no “consequences” for his actions.  The question that Plato’s character, Glaucon asks is, “Why shouldn’t he do as he pleases?”  “Why should he care about morality?”    This approach to ethics would say that one’s actions should produce the MOST good for the MOST people.
