(6) Moore argues that, in the argument which tries to prove that determinism rules out the possibility of acting of one’s free will, “could” has a different meaning in the premises having to do with determinism and in the premise that has to do with free will. Explain the sense in which if a person did not do some action A, they could not have done that action A if determinism is true. (To do this, you will have to explain what the thesis of determinism holds.) Explain the sense in which Moore thinks a person could have done otherwise, if they did the action of their own free will. Take some example and illustrate this with regard to someone who is and someone is not doing the action of their own free will — explain why the one person lacks a capacity that the other has that goes towards their ‘freedom’ or lack thereof. Explain explicitly why there is no incompatibility between those two senses— so why it could be true both that a person could not have done otherwise in the determinist sense, but at the same time, they could have done otherwise in the free will sense.
