In a paragraph response, I want you to consider the following: 1) What is the categorical imperative? 2) Let’s imagine a student–we will call him Rollo Tomasi–who is absolutely not interested in learning. Rollo is nonetheless in college because he recognizes a degree has a certain exchange value, one that he hopes will get him a good job, a high salary, and all the benefits that those things can confer. Any learning that happens over the course of his college education is irrelevant to him, but he does want the reputation of a college graduate. As such, Rollo is willing to commit academic dishonesty (plagiarize other students, reuse material for other classes, and use ChatGPT for whatever he can get away with). Despite Rollo’s intentions–his indifference to learning, his desire for a reputation as a college grad–why does the categorical imperative render his plan to cheat illogical and immoral?
