A.J. was taking a greyhound bus back home for the holidays when the bus was suddenly stopped by a police officer. The officer stood by the entryway of the bus and looked around. A.J. was closest to the door and was the first person the officer made eye contact with. “Will you show me what’s inside that bag?” The officer asked. A.J. felt like he couldn’t say no to an officer, and he couldn’t leave because the officer was standing in front of the exit, so A.J., feeling like he had no other choice, complied with the officer’s request. The open bag revealed .08 ounces of methamphetamine. The officer then arrested A.J. and seized the evidence. A.J. then offered some intel in exchange for his charges to be dropped. A.J. told the officer who he had purchased the meth from. The officer used this information to get a search warrant for the drug dealer’s home. The officer knocked on the door, and waited only 15 seconds before bashing the door down and entering the home uninvited. Once inside, the officer found meth in a bag on the couch in the living room. The search warrant said nothing about firearms, however, the officer knew that firearms and drugs go hand in hand and kept a lookout for firearms as he searched for more drugs. There, on the kitchen table, was a firearm. The officer placed the firearm into evidence. The owner of the home, hearing the loud noise, came out of his room where he was taking a nap and was immediately placed under arrest. Discuss all relevant issues.
