Please use the information below to answer the following questions The Portable Toilet Rental Industry The Portable Toilet Rental industry rents toilets to customers for specified periods of time. The industry has low concentration, with the industry’s four largest players combined, accounting for just less than 15.0% of total revenue. The industry mainly consists of many small, regional companies. Companies rent portable toilets by the day, week, or month to three main customer markets: the construction industry, commercial establishments, special event services, and sometimes disaster relief services depending on the level of need. The industry is price competitive, especially in metropolitan areas where a higher concentration of operators is located. There is little product differentiation for portable toilets. The portable toilet manufacturing industry is not very concentrated with 10 main manufacturers selling portable toilets at prices between $400.00 to $1,000 per unit. However, portable toilet renters sometimes differ in their level of bundling with other products, such as portable handwashing stations and/or sanitation stands. Companies are also able to include other guarantees on top of low prices. This includes guaranteeing cleanliness, providing deodorizers, and providing swift delivery and pickups. Some companies in the industry offer higher end portable toilets with additional amenities such as hand sanitizers and mirrors; though, demand for these products is relatively low. Currently regulation for the industry is set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a division of the US Department of Labor whose mission is to prevent work related injuries by issuing and enforcing safety standards for the workplace. However, standards for portable toilets are low, and primarily concerned with the number of toilets on-site and proper disposal of waste. Construction sites and outdoor events are dependent on portable toilets to serve workers and attendees. Construction site operators are legally required to provide toilets and sanitation to employees on site. Meanwhile, portable toilets are typically required for large events such as concerts, festivals, sporting events, and weddings when the number of attendees is expected to overwhelm the existing infrastructure. Traffic at outdoor recreation sites, such as campsites, beaches, lakesides, parks, sporting grounds and zoos also contributes to demand for portable toilet rental services. Nonspecialized heavy-duty trailers and trucks are needed to carry the toilets to and from locations and companies who wish to serve wide geographic regions must absorb high logistical and transportation costs. Despite these barriers, acquisitions have become common in recent years as the industry’s largest players attempt to expand into regions and markets for potential growth. Nonetheless, the level of market share concentration is expected to remain low. Industry operators must purchase chemical agents, pumps, protective gear, sanitary paper, soap, hand sanitizer and other related supplies (mostly commodities). Also included is the cost of fuel required to transport toilets to and from drop-off sites, which represents 17.0% of revenue on average across the industry. Insurance costs are also high, due to potential accidents associated with portable toilets. Exhibit 1: Industry Growth *Growth in years ’25-30 is based on predicted trends.
