A genetic condition is caused by a recessive allele. It develops later in life, and is very harmful if untreated, but it can be prevented with appropriate treatment. A couple (A. and J.) with young children learn that they each have a parent who has the condition. Neither A. nor J. currently have symptoms of the condition, but they could have the recessive allele and develop the condition and/or pass it on to their children. The parents decide to get the whole family screened so they know whether any of them will need to get treatment to prevent the condition. The genetic counselor they work with gives them the following information: the dominant allele (N) results in two DNA fragments – one 90 bp and one 60 bp long the recessive allele (n) results in a DNA fragment that is 150 base pairs (bp) long each individual has 2 alleles for the gene, and can have the genotype NN, Nn, or nn The gel with the family’s results is below. The DNA ruler in the right side contains DNA fragments that are 50, 100, 150, and 200 bp long. The DNA was loaded at the top of the gel as shown in the image & the DNA fragments moved toward the bottom. The band in the DNA ruler that is 50 bp long is band [a]. When running the gel, the DNA moved from the top to the bottom of the gel, so the positive charge would have been applied to [b].

Both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells can “turn on” (activate expression of) multiple genes at the same time that are all needed for a particular metabolic pathway or process. In prokaryotic cells, this is often because the genes are [a]; in eukaryotic cells, this is often because the genes are [b].

ΔG for the reaction above is [a]. An enzyme is able to catalyze this reaction. The enzyme would increase the rate of reaction by [b].

Use the molecules above and your knowledge of biological molecules and cells to answer the following questions. Molecule [e] can be used as a source of energy or to build polysaccharides. Molecule [g] could be used to synthesize DNA, which occurs during [h]. Molecule [a] could be used to synthesize RNA, which occurs during the process of [b]. Molecule [c] could be used to synthesize a protein, which occurs during the process of [d]. The feature that characterizes all lipids is [x].
