[BLANK-1] was a Confucian follower who recorded Confucius’s sayings for posterity. Unlike Confucius and many of his followers, this man had served for many years in the court of his home state. He believed that human beings were innately selfish and evil, but that through education and ritual they could learn to put moral principle above their own interest. He believed that Heaven does not intervene in human affairs.

Muhammad gave Muslims the idea of a unified [BLANK-1]. This was a community that consisted of all people whose bond was a common religious faith. This concept was instrumental in helping Islam become both a political and religious movement; it also facilitated conversion to the faith.

He united Egypt once more and Egypt enjoyed a brief period of prosperity under his and his son’s rule.
