What Art should be at MCCC? For this essay you will make an argument for why engagement with a specific piece of art should be required for all MCCC students. Audience: MCCC Decision Makers (+ Community) Remember there is no one “right” answer; the goal is to state and support your answer. You must: clearly state a thesis that responds to the prompt engage meaningfully with TWO texts that have been assigned and read as a class for Essay 1 and/or Essay 2. Quotes should be no more than 3 lines. engage meaningfully with ONE text that you find using MCCC’s databases that I approve (If you do not submit your texts for approval, you will not be able to earn credit for Essay 3) In a successful essay, you will: name (and link) the piece of art state how the art you identify meets your definition of art (drawing on your ideas/thinking from Essay 1) clarify how this piece of art is doing what art should do (drawing on your ideas/thinking from Essay 2) specify in what way (how) you think students should be required to engage with the art Draft Parameters: 1500 words (approximately 6 MLA formatted pages) not including your heading Include a major claim (also called a thesis) All evidence must be cited in the body of the essay Essay must be MLA-formatted (Additional MLA Resources: General Formatting; Works Cited; and Interactive Works Cited Template) General Tips: If the prompt is not a question, it can be helpful to rephrase the prompt as a question. Your answer will be your thesis. Greene and Lidinsky’s chapter, “From Formulating to Developing a Thesis” may be a big help. YOU CANNOT EDIT WHAT YOU DID NOT WRITE, so write something — even if it’s “not good” or if you don’t like it. We can work with a draft. Remember what Anne LaMott wrote. Use the M.E.A.L. before and after you write. The rubric is available here and in Blackboard. Please note that this rubric reflects how your essay will be evaluated, but you will submit additional documents with your revised essay that impact your grade. Some brainstorming questions/prompts that may help you continue writing (we’ve been writing since we started reading these sources!): How has your definition of art evolved this semester? What would someone who absolutely disagrees with you say? What does engagement with art look like for students? Is “engagement” an assignment? A field trip? A display somewhere on campus? What would be the best way for students to engage? On what scale do you envision engagement happening? Section-by-section scale? As an example: ENG 101-300 is a different section than ENG 101-310)? By Course? As an example: ENG 101 (all sections) vs. ENG 222 (all sections)? By division? For example: ENG 101 is a course offered by the Liberal Arts Division. By major? By year (freshmen, sophomore, etc.) Note that the scale may impact who the decision makers are: Chairs (oversee departments, such as English and World Languages); Deans oversee divisions such as the Liberal Arts Division; Coaches; the Vice President of Academic Affairs (oversees all academics at the college); the Presidents (responsible for all college operations). MLA Guidelines: Include an MLA formatted heading (There’s an example in our syllabus) Refer to our syllabus for an example of how to format your heading (or use this resource).
