It is well known how Vitamin C, ascorbic acid, has powerful antioxidant properties.  Vitamin C is an antioxidant because it has the capability to give away hydrogen atoms to harmful unstable free radical molecules, reducing then those dangerous molecules.  Free radicals turn into more stable molecules, and consequently Vitamin C decreases oxidative damage and lowers the risk of certain chronic diseases.
