The two major peace time nuclear disasters Fukushima and Chernobyl were due to a loss of cooling water to the reactor causing severe heat and tremendous steam pressure build up in the reactors. This caused the heavy steel reactors to explode because of the steam pressure. This resulted in the reactor core melting down and the release of huge quantities of highly radioactive material to the environment. These instances resulted in largest wide scale radiation contamination events since World War II.
