You’re working with a mom who has a child diagnosed with Down syndrome. He engages in tantrums many times throughout the day. The mom says she has tried everything, but the best strategy is to “give him what he wants” because that will keep him calm and “since he has Down syndrome, he cannot control his behavior.” She has reported that she is feeling like behavioral services will not be effective for her child. She shares that she has negative thoughts about her child’s diagnosis and her ability to implement behavior-change programs. 1. Based on the principles of optimism training, how might you begin the discussion regarding her negative thoughts?  2.
