Questions

At present, glоbаl use оf аntibiоtics in livestock production rаnges from 9 mg per kg of animal in Norway to 318 mg per kg of animal in China.  In a recent issue of Science, three strategies are proposed to reduce global antibiotic use in livestock production, with the aim of reducing the rate that human pathogens gain antibiotic resistance. Two of these strategies are (1) limit use of antibiotics in livestock production to the present global average of 50 mg per kg of animal and (2) tax antibiotics used in livestock by 50% to discourage their use and raise funds for development of new antibiotics, better livestock production practices, etc. For each of these proposed methods, comment briefly on whether or not you think it is a good idea, and why.  If you think that you need more information to form an opinion, explain what this information is.
