Triethаnоlаmine is used tо trаp carbоn dioxide that is emitted from power plants. When it is dissolved in water it undergoes a Brønsted acid/base reaction to reach equilibrium, as shown in the image. The amine reacts with water to give an ammonium cation and the hydroxide anion. An equilibrium is established and so the ammonium cation and the hydroxide anion also react to give the amine and water.Identify the acid and the base on both sides of the Brønsted acid/base equilibrium.

Fоr Questiоns 12 – 17, refer tо the following pаssаge: Locunа Incorporated (Locuna) hired Dr. Howard Mierzwiak to invent and use a targeted memory erasure surgical device to erase unwanted and painful memories in patients. A patient must recall a moment that the patient does not wish to remember and the device will erase that memory. Assume each share is valued at $1. 3,000,000 shares were issued to the founders. 2,000,000 shares are reserved (but unissued) for a stock option pool. 1,000,000 restricted shares were issued to Dr. Mierzwiak as part of an executive compensation package. The shares were subject to a 4-year vesting schedule with a 1-year cliff, and all shares have now vested. 2,000,000 shares are potentially issuable upon conversion of outstanding convertible notes (the notes have not yet converted). 2,000,000 shares were sold to a venture capital investor from authorized but unissued shares. One of Locuna’s clients, Joel, decides to undergo this procedure. Prior to having the procedure, Joel asked, “Is there any risk of brain damage?” Dr. Mierzwiak responded, “Well, technically speaking, the operation is brain damage.” Dr. Mierzwiak fully explained to Joel how the device works and told Joel that the device monitors brain activity and eliminates brain cells holding unwanted or painful memories. Dr. Mierzwiak warned Joel that any memory that Joel recalls during the procedure will be erased and therefore he should only think of painful and unwanted memories. On top of that, the device has instructions on the label, “WARNING: ONLY THINK OF BAD MEMORIES. IF YOU THINK OF GOOD MEMORIES, THEY WILL BE ERASED.” Dr. Mierzwiak explained to Joel that if Joel recalls anything other than his unwanted or painful memories, those memories will be erased as well. Joel decided to undergo the treatment. Joel signed a waiver fully acknowledging that he understood the instructions, warnings, and risks. Weeks after the procedure, Joel saw a picture of himself in an apparent happy moment that he believes he should remember and would like to remember. Joel does not recall this happy moment and surmises that Dr. Mierzwiak’s machine accidentally erased his happy memory, instead of just unwanted and painful memories. Joel sues Locuna for brain injury.
