The following passage comes form Mary Kathryn Nagle's Sovereignty:  SARAH BIRD NOTHRUP: You have an impossible decision to make. I wish you didn't have to make it. But you do.     When my father told me I couldn't marry a "savage," I told him I'd rather die than live without you. He laughed, and so I asked him to define "savage."  You know what he said? Someone who isn't civilized. And I said what's "civilized?" And he said, "someone who lives by the rule of law." And so now I ask, who is more savage? A nation who makes laws and abides by them, or a country who makes laws and refuses to enforce them?     We are both willing to die for what we love.  JOHN RIDGE: Will you forgive me?  SARAH BIRD NOTHRUP: Forgive you?  JOHN RIDGE: For choosing my nation over my family.  SARAH BIRD NOTHRUP [to JOHN RIDGE]: Your family is your nation.
