This figure published several books defending slavery as a necessary evil and a positive good for both slave and slave master. The person embraced the “benevolent paternalism” justification of slavery and argued that blacks were better off within the institution of slavery in the south than were “wage slaves” – the northern workers who were exploited and paid little by industrial capitalists.

One such method involved filibustering, where private armies lacking the authority or backing of a national government attempted to invade other countries. [BLANK-1] was a filibusterer who had a modicum of success in terms of trying to establish pro-slavery territories outside the United States. His greatest (albeit short-lived) success came when his private army effectively conquered the independent nation of Nicaragua. He established a pro-slavery American government in Nicaragua and was even officially recognized as the official president of the country by U.S. President Franklin Pierce.
