Pаt, а 78-yeаr-оld elderly wоmen, was diagnоsed with Alzheimer’s Disease three years ago. It has been increasingly difficult for her to perform daily tasks, and as a result her hygiene significantly declined. Eventually, her family decided that professional care was needed, and she was sent to an assisted living facility. Since then she has increasingly forgotten who any of her family members are or who she even was. Her family members report that she no longer is who she used to be. Her life is dull and the expenses required to keep her in the facility are very high. Her family members are debating about whether she should be euthanized, but this is not a common practice where they live, nor is it legal. Question: (1) discuss the ethics of euthanasia with respect to this case. What kind of euthanasia are the family members proposing (consider the two dimensions of euthanasia described by Vaughn and discussed during class) and explain why it is that kind of euthanasia. (2) Would this procedure breach informed consent? Why or why not? Please explain your answer and consider what ethical principles are involved here. Does it violate the patient’s autonomy? Would negative or positive consequences happen?
