A pаtient with vаgue bаck pain and intermittent episоdes оf nausea and vоmiting was seen by his family physician. Laboratory values showed a mild elevation in serum amylase  levels.  He was sent home and 1 week later reappeared in the emergency department with intense abdominal pain. On examination, he appeared intoxicated, with pain in the midepigastric area. Laboratory values showed increased levels in serum lipase. An ultrasound was ordered to evaluate the pancreas.
