Imаgine the fоllоwing hypоtheticаl scenаrio. You are a student interested in a group of true bugs that feed on melons. A new pest species has come into Florida and it has an interesting biology. Although all of the other closely related species have typical looking nymphs and adults, this new species has extremely neotenic adults (adults that look like nymphs but can reproduce), wherein the only noticeable difference between the nymphs and adults is that the adults have functional reproductive organs and apparent genetalia. Interestingly the cuticle of the nymphs in this group is bright green whereas the adult cuticle of all other species is brown. Adults of the neotenic species are green, except for their genetalia that are brown (like adults in the rest of the group). Unfortunately, you were foolish enough to ask the departmental physiologist to be on your committee and now they are demanding that one chapter of your dissertation be physiological. They have suggested the hypothesis that neotony may be maintained by high circulating levels of JH at the last nymphal-adult molt, which would be highly unusual. 12) How would you test this hypothesis? Describe in detail two different but complementary experimental approaches you would take in testing this hypothesis (including appropriate controls) and the principles of how that approach works and why it would be a good one to take.
