Apprоximаtely 15% оf cоuples of reproductive аge hаve fertility problems, and half of those cases may be related to male lifestyle factors. In particular, high-energy diets, which are diets high in sugars and saturated fat, may alter testicular metabolism and affect the quality of sperm, leading to male infertility. To assess this association, researchers recruited 1994 men ages 18 to 45 who were planning to start a family in the next 3 years, none of whom had any previously diagnosed fertility issues. Their current eating habits were assessed, and it was found that 612 of the participants ate a high-energy diet; the remainder ate a Mediterranean diet focused on consuming seafood, poultry, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. The participants were then followed for five years and were assessed to see if any fertility issues developed. There were 430 cases of male infertility in the high-energy diet group.
