Text B - The Lаst Cаrt Pаrt One On yоur first read, nоtice gоals, risks, and unanswered questions. Complete Questions 6–9 before reading Part Two. [1] Rain hammered the roof of the school gym. The fall art show would open in twenty minutes, and water was leaking beside the back door. Nia wanted her painted model bridge to be the first thing visitors saw. She had spent three weeks building it. [2] Only one flat cart was available. Nia rolled it toward her bridge. Across the gym, Eli was lifting younger students’ paper drawings off a table near the leak. He had already moved two stacks and was reaching for a third. [3] “Those pictures will tear if they get wet,” Eli said. “Can I use the cart?” Nia gripped its handle. If she gave it up, her bridge might not reach the front display before the show began. [4] A drop struck the edge of a drawing. Nia was reluctant to let go; she kept her hands on the handle even as she watched the paper curl. Then she looked at the dry floor beneath her bridge and at the dark patch spreading under Eli’s table.
Text B - The Lаst Cаrt Pаrt Twо Read this part AFTER cоmpleting yоur notes and prediction in Question 9. [5] Nia pushed the cart toward Eli. “Take these first. My bridge can wait.” Together they loaded the drawings and rolled them to a dry table. Eli thanked her but went straight back for the last stack, still focused on keeping every picture safe. [6] Once the drawings were safe, Eli helped Nia place her bridge on the cart. They reached the front display as visitors entered. Her bridge stood beside the younger students’ work instead of in front of it. [7] When a visitor praised the bridge, Nia pointed to the drawings beside it. “You should see these, too,” she said. She stayed to tell visitors about both displays. Eli checked that none of the papers were still damp, just as carefully as he had before.
