Yоu’re а new First Officer flying with fаirly experienced Cаptain whо has a great reputatiоn. After a couple of uneventful legs, you are preparing for a departure from Bangor Intl Airport in Maine. It is night and the weather is below freezing with light to moderate snow precipitation. Ground operations has cleaned your aircraft with Type I de-icing fluid and has applied Type IV anti-ice fluid. The Holdover charts indicate you have an estimated 30 minutes of contamination protection. As you hold short for takeoff there is a delay in retrieving your ATC departure clearance as an emergency aircraft is inbound. After about 30 minutes the emergency is terminated and you are preparing for departure. As you look at the visible aircraft surfaces it appears that the Type IV fluid has turned from a bright sheen to a milky appearance. You remember from UND courses and your airline cold weather training that this indicates a likely failure of the anti-ice fluid protection. You bring this to the captain’s attention. He states that “he’s seen worse” and it should be fine for a departure. Also, he mentions that another de-ice and anti-ice application could cause a delay that will exceed your crew duty day thus cancelling the flight and stranding the passengers.Explain how you might get the captain’s attention using the Assertive Communication Strategy discussed in class. What is your plan and what will you do if he continues to ignore you?
