He knows from a conversation with Acme's Chief Financial Officer that the company needs every sales person to hit their sales goals in order for Acme to be profitable for the quarter. Bill tells Kate that when he was a sales person and was short a few sales, he would approach customers who he knew would soon be purchasing a system. He would get the customer to place the order now by offering them a discounted price if they agreed to come to the factory, look at an empty shell of a system that was not yet built, and sign paperwork documenting their acceptance of the unbuilt system as if it was already built. The signed paperwork would be sent to Acme's accounting department, and the order would count as part of this quarter's sales. Because of Acme's generous credit policy, the customer would not have to pay for the order until the end of the next quarter, by which time the system would be built and delivered.
