Della was able to ascertain from the letter that Martina had been active in the communist party in the 1960s when Martina and Paul were in college and were dating in their early 20’s. One reason that Paul and Martina had broken up in college was that their respective political positions were so different. Paul and Martina had not had any contact whatsoever since they graduated from college when they were both 22 years old. Paul had only kept the letter as a keepsake and a remembrance of his college years. Paul had never spoken to anyone concerning his short relationship with Martina since that time. However, using the contents of the letter, Della began to speak with others in the small community about the fact that Paul had been involved with a known communist sympathizer in the 1960s. Della also said that, “Paul is subversive and therefore not trustworthy.” As word spread, Paul’s business fell off, and he was asked to resign from the positions that he held with his church and the chamber of commerce.
