“Creаte the Questiоn”: Write аnd аnswer yоur оwn compare and contrast question. Choose two buildings from LMs 1 (Prehistory), 2 (Ancient Near East), and/or 3 (Ancient Egypt). Read through the directions below before you get started. (250-500 words)Choosing your examples: Choose buildings that might at first seem very different but actually have a lot in common (for example, Machu Picchu and the Forbidden City look nothing alike, but were both monumental palace complexes. What do they have in common architecturally? How do their differences speak to their different cultural contexts- the beliefs, governments, time periods, technologies and needs of the two civilizations that built them) or two buildings that seem to have a lot in common, but are actually quite different (for example, a Chinese Pagoda and a Japanese pagoda. They are very similar and represent the same religious beliefs. How are they different in terms of function, materials, etc.). Try to pinpoint all of the most important similarities and differences in the two buildings. Hint: try to find buildings that have similar functions (palace, place of worship, tomb, etc.). You might also think about buildings that are notable for attributes like monumentality, ritual use, entertainment (for example, a MesoAmerican ball court and the Roman Colosseum or a Roman bath), technological innovation (like the Great Wall of China and a Roman aquaduct or other concrete construction), or shared architectural elements. Question Format: Each question should begin with a prompt to identify the two buildings. IE: "Identify the buildings on the left and right by architect (if known), civilization, and date." Writing your Questions: When someone reads your question, it should be clear what answer you are looking for. Don't hesitate to give hints or even tell the reader what you see as the main similarity or difference between the buildings. Example of a good question: "Both of these buildings were places of entertainment. What entertainment took place here and how does the architecture reflect the purpose of each building? What do the differences in architecture and function reflect about the civilizations responsible to their construction? How are these civilizations different? How are they similar? Example of a weak question: Compare and contrast these buildings. How are they similar? How are they different? What does that reflect about the people who built them? Answer your question: This, you already know how to do. Take a look back at your compare/contrast essay from LM 1. Start with a statement (one or two sentences) of the main difference or similarity that you will explore in your answer. Discuss the two buildings together. A lot of people discuss one building and then the other without really comparing and contrasting them. ***Remember, never copy and paste or copy information word-for-word from Blackboard, your textbook, or online.
