Accusаtiоns during the 1692 Essex Cоunty Witch Scаre rоse significаntly following the examination of [BLANK-1] in April. Prior to this event, the accusations had been limited to Salem itself and the magistrates had little to show for their efforts; only a four-year-old girl and a slave woman of color had confessed while all the others maintained their innocence. However, the examination of this fourteen-year-old girl from Topsfield accelerated the witch scare and allowed it to spread outside of Salem. Even prior to the first afflictions in Salem Village, she had bragged about having made a covenant with Satan, mocked religion, performed a mock baptism on her stepmother, and joked with local children about seeing the Devil over the bedstead. She claimed she had “sold my selfe boddy & Soull to the old boy and I seen the divell and made a covenant or bargin with him…he promised me many fine things…he’s a black man with an hat and I signed his book for two years service…A cat and things like men asked me to sign the book.” After confessing, she apologized to her tormented accusers and all of them suddenly snapped out of their afflictions. She then accused other people of being witches (including her stepmother) and she claimed she took part in a demonic communion of blood and red bread. She was found guilty of practicing witchcraft but was later reprieved and survived the witch scare, once again demonstrating that confessor witches tended to survive while those who denied the charges were often executed.
