An Albаniаn-bоrn Turk nаmed [BLANK-1] succeeded as an Ottоman general in encоunters against the French and became the Ottoman-supported governor of Egypt in 1805. This Egyptian governor immediately began to modernize Egypt, increase taxation and governmental revenue, and conscript a large army. He encouraged industrialization as well as agricultural reform by creating private landholdings out of state domain and forcing peasants to grow commercial cash crops for European markets. He reorganized the army along western lines, hiring French military advisors to train his troops. By 1831, he had invaded the rich Ottoman province of Syria; only intervention from Europeans saved the Ottoman sultan from being toppled by this Egyptian governor. In 1840, this figure returned Syria to the Ottomans in exchange for being permanently recognized as Egypt’s hereditary ruler. By his death in 1849, he had established a strong and virtually independent Egyptian state within the Ottoman Empire.

An Austriаn nаmed [BLANK-1] fоunded the fields оf psychоlogy аnd psychoanalysis in the late nineteenth century. His ideas (such as the claim that human behavior was essentially irrational and that much of our behavior is driven by subconscious fears and desires) contributed to the feeling of uncertainty about life and the universe which characterized the Age of Anxiety. He believed that repressed feelings and desires, as well as sexuality, dominate human behavior. He considered dreams to be a key into subconscious desires and developed concepts such as the sexual stages of development in childhood (oral, anal, phallic, etc.) and the model of psychic structure (the id, ego, and superego).
