An epidemiоlоgicаl study wаs perfоrmed to investigаte the hypothesis that children in daycare have a higher rate of respiratory infections than children who are not in daycare. Researchers enrolled 120 children aged 2 to 4 years who attended daycare for at least 30 hours per week and 120 children aged 2 to 4 years who primarily received care from a parent, guardian, or a single non-household adult. Study participants were followed until their first respiratory infection, they dropped out of the study, or the study ended 1 year later. Thirty cases of respiratory infections were diagnosed in each group. The children in daycare contributed a total of 80 person-years and the children who were not in daycare contributed a total of 100 person-years.
