Trаditiоnаl fаmilies were difficult tо maintain fоr enslaved peoples. Mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, and brothers and sisters could be separated from one another, often when the children were at a young age. To deal with this problem, slaves developed [BLANK-1] upon a plantation – a type of age-grade system where elders in the community looked after all youths and young slaves viewed children of the same age as their siblings (blood ties or not). This had a long-term impact on African-American culture and vernacular, with elders being referred to respectfully as “aunt” or “uncle” and similarly aged people referring to other community members as “brother” or “sister.”
