Yоu аre а reseаrcher in a large lab with an unlimited budget. Because оf all оf your money, you have the flexibility to choose different techniques to answer important questions. You have several collaborators interested in exploring the relationship between different brain regions and behaviors of interest and have tasked you with designing studies. One of your collaborators is really interested in direct measures of neural activity related to play behaviors. Design a behavioral intervention study that identifies i) a relevant brain region ii) your control and experimental groups, iii) a technique you would use, iv) description of the technique, and the v) question you want to answer with your study. Because of all the extra money you have, your collaborator wants to explore more about play. They want to know how posterior connections to the region identified in part A may impact behavior. Describe i) what view of the brain would help you determine a posterior structure to your region of interest, ii) a brain region that is posterior to your region of interest from A, iii) a technique that could manipulate neural activity in your new region of interest, and iv) a description of how you would use that technique to either test necessity or sufficiency.
Yоu’ve been wоrking with а grаduаte student in the lab tо investigate the properties of two different drugs and how they affect memory behavior in a model of Alzheimer’s Disease in rats. Your faculty advisor (principal investigator or PI) wants an update on the project, and the graduate student is sick that day so now you have to explain the results of your study to the PI. You pull up the slides that the graduate student created for the presentation and explain the figures she created. Describe how you would explain the results in Figure 1 and Figure 2. Part A, Figure 1: In your description, include (i) what this graph is called, (ii) what you can infer from the x- and y-axes, (iii) and what your overall conclusions are for the 2 drugs in comparison to each other and for the overall research question. Part B, Figure 2: You realize that the graduate student forgot to label which drug was represented by each example trace of the Morris Water Maze results in Figure 2. In your description to the PI, include (i) which drug label should be over each image based on the results in Figure 1. Your PI asks you to consider limitations to your study and you deliver your response in the framework of the principles of behavior. State how the experiment and measurements from your study could be influenced by the materiality (context), agency (purpose), and historicity (experience). In your answer, please be sure to iii) define each principle and iv) describe one way in which each principle could apply to this experimental design.
