In clаss, we reаd excerpts оf wоrks thаt оffered internal critiques of Athenian democracy from people who lived within that regime (e.g. Thucydides, Plato, Aristotle). Write an essay where you articulate some of the problems with democracy that they described, and if relevant or present, any potential solutions or alternatives. Last, what are the implications for democracy in the contemporary era? Make sure to formulate a main argument or thesis that you support with evidence from our discussions and readings. N.B. You may discuss the portions of their works that were quoted in Held's Models of Democracy chapter on Ancient Athens in addition to the primary text readings we did in week 2, but you must discuss the primary texts from week 2. Do not discuss portions of the texts outside of assigned readings. You may use your books and notes, but no other outside resources or assistance.
