Pаrt 2 Identifying Mаin Ideаs The main ideas оf the fоllоwing paragraphs appear at different locations. Identify each main idea by filling in its sentence number in the space provided. For example, if you think that the main idea is sentence 2, just write the number 2 in the blank. 1Most non-human mammals demonstrate only a passing interest in the dead of their own species. 2Lions will generally sniff or lick another dead lion before beginning to eat the body; chimpanzees will keep trying to interact with their dead friends and relatives until the bodies start to decompose. 3Elephants, however, are unique among non-human mammals in that they appear to actually mourn their dead. 4When presented with the dead body of another elephant, elephants will generally become agitated and upset, and caress the carcass with their trunks and feet. 5 In experiments in which elephants have been shown the skulls of a rhinoceros, a buffalo, and another elephant, they have demonstrated interest in only the elephant skull, gently touching and investigating it with their trunks and feet in much the same way they would a living elephant. 6They also appear to be able to distinguish even very small pieces of ivory (elephant tusk) from other substances, such as wood and rocks; when presented with all three substances, elephants are overwhelmingly drawn to, and become agitated over, the ivory. 7Animal scientists interpret these patterns of behavior as evidence that elephants are in mourning.
Chооse the sentence thаt best expresses the implied mаin ideа оf each of the following paragraph. 1Are men also victims of domestic violence? 2Some women do abuse and even kill their partners. 3Approximately 12 percent of men reported that their wives had engaged in physically aggressive behavior against them in the past year—nearly the same percentage of claims reported by women. 4The difference between male and female batterers is twofold. 5First, although their frequency may be similar, their impact is drastically different: women are typically injured in domestic incidents two to three times more often than are men. 6These injuries tend to be more severe and result in significantly more deaths. 7Women do engage in moderate aggression, such as pushing and shoving, at rates almost equal to those of men. 8But severe aggression that is likely to land a victim in the hospital is almost always male against female. 9Second, a woman who is physically abused by a man is generally intimidated by him; she fears that he will use his power and control over her in some fashion. 10Men, however, generally report that they do not live in fear of their wives.
