Dоubt, whаt is it gооd for? Over the course of the first unit, we exаmined severаl thinkers who have incorporated doubt or skepticism into their thoughts on epistemology. For this prompt, please explore how doubt was used by thinkers such as Descartes, Princess Elisabeth, Hume, Gettier, and Bostrom. It is expected that you will incorporate at least three of these writers into your response. As part of your response, consider how these thinkers arrived at a state of doubt, what they were skeptical about, and how they resolved their doubts (if the doubts were resolved.) What did the doubt lead to? What does their doubt show us about the learning process? Does doubt lead to knowledge? Concerning Your Education One of the focal points of our discussion this unit has been on education. We’ve looked at several different criticisms, concerns, and observations about education. Thinkers like Krishnamurti and Descartes critiqued the kind of education that they encountered. Burkhart distinguished between different goals in education and learning. Begin by giving an account of the types of criticisms that Krishnamurti and Descartes gave about the education process. What was education currently focused on? What were some social and intellectual concerns about this type of education? Then, look at how figures like Russell and Krishnamurti provide alternatives to this type of education. What is the goal of a ‘good’ education for all of these thinkers? Virtues The epistemology unit began with a lengthy analysis of Aristotle. In this module, we discussed the different types of reasoning a person can conduct. Begin this essay by recounting what these reasoning types are, and then provide a brief description of each. Then, look at Aristotle through the lens of Bloomfield. How does he criticize some of Aristotle’s conclusions? Does he offer alternatives to thinking about virtue and justification? What are some benefits of Bloomfield’s assumptions?
