Despite the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment, along with Radical Reconstruction, African Americans did not have a much better situation in the 1960s and they did in the 1860s. Many African Americans still faced discrimination in everyday life, their right to vote was repressed in many states where federal laws were not enforced, and African Americans freedom was still defined as being free from slavery but not equal before the law with their white counterparts. The 1960s would see a new, revolutionary Civil Rights Movement begin in the Southern United States. This movement was a hard fought struggle as many were beaten, jailed and even killed for trying to bring true freedom to the African American in the United States. However, their efforts would not be in vain as 1965 would see the African American citizen gain a new legal standing in the nation as discrimination, voter suppression and segregation had all been outlawed and enforced by the federal government. What was the reason the Civil Rights movement was successful in the 1960s? Was it due to the attack on segregation? Was it due to the non-violent crusades? Or was it due to the fact that the Federal Government began enforcing the legal rights of African Americans?
