A relаtively new phenоmenоn hаs been discоvered in the lаst 20 years called the "zinc spark." This can be viewed in the panel of images below. Follow the images across the top row left to right and then the bottom row, left to right.  You can see the very bright zinc spark of the image in the lower right corner. This event occurs in a fraction of the second that sperm enters the egg.  Although first seen in mammals, this event appears to be conserved evolutionarily. Triggered by the calcium wave, this biological flash physically alters the egg's outer layer to prevent multiple sperm from entering and signals the start of embryonic development. Additional studies has shown the presence of zinc sparks across both vertebrate and invertebrate lineages, and this suggests which of the following evolutionary conclusions?
