Pleаse chооse ONLY ONE оf the four essаy prompts below. Before you stаrt writing, please think through the different situations in Yukio Mishima's The Sound of Waves (and any films that you may discuss) that relate to the specific prompts. In responding in essay form to the prompt that you choose, please be sure to discuss at substantial length Yukio Mashima's novel, The Sound of Waves (1954). Depending on which prompt you choose, you may, in addition, discuss any films that we have viewed this semester. Your essay needs to provide clear and detailed explanations. You may draw on class discussion in responding to one of the prompts, but mainly your essay needs to express your own ideas. This essay should be clear and well written, and it should consist of a relatively brief but clear introduction and relatively brief but clear conclusion. The introduction should have a thesis statement (which may be your specific response to the prompt), and the conclusion should refer to that thesis statement. The body of the essay (that is, the part of the essay that does not include the introduction and conclusion) should be approximately three paragraphs and should provide evidence that supports your thesis. Please be sure to give yourself time to proofread and edit your essay before you submit it. A) If we may infer that Yukio Mishima’s The Sound of Waves represents what are, from the author's perspective, important features of Japanese culture and values, what are they? What may we learn from these elements of Japanese culture and values? B) Compare and contrast the conflict and conflict resolution connected to one or more of the central characters in The Sound of Waves’ with the conflict resolution portrayed in one or more other books and/or films that we have studied this semester. What may we learn from these works about conflict resolution? C) Arguably, The Sound of Waves is a bildungsroman involving the character of Shinji. Do you find that this novel also is a bildungsroman involving the character of Hatsue? Please provide a detailed argument answering this question about the portrayal of Hatsue.  D) What important lessons may we learn from the similarities and differences between the character of Shinji in The Sound of Waves and the character of Lenny in Cracking India?
