Here is аn excerpt frоm the dоcument "Jоhn Rolfe Recounts the Arrivаl of Slаves in Virginia (1619)." You can read the complete document in Chapter 2 primary source reader. In the excerpt, the spelling has been modernized. "In May 1619, the Margaret of Bristol (the ship) arrived with thirty-four men, all healthy and in good condition, as well as many religious gifts. ... Those with the most experience found that an industrious man, if not otherwise employed, could tend four acres of corn and 1,000 tobacco plants. While some claimed an acre would yield only three or four barrels (of tobacco), we commonly produced four or five, and on newly cleared land six, seven, or eight. A barrel of peas and beans was considered equal to two barrels of corn, producing thirty or forty bushels per acre, so that one man could provide corn for five people and clothing for two people through the profits of tobacco. They also claimed English wheat would produce only sixteen bushels per acre, but we have harvested thirty. In addition, no place has more white and blue marble for improving the land, if only we had carpenters to build carts and plows, and skilled workers to train cattle to pull them. Although we have tried to accomplish these things, our lack of experience has made little successful except the planting of tobacco. Yet many people became so greedy to produce large amounts of tobacco that they produced poor-quality crops. Furthermore, many dishonest tobacco dealers in England would sell bad tobacco as if it were high-quality Spanish tobacco (“Verinas”), while whatever trash remained would be labeled as coming from Virginia. Such malicious attitudes, we know, are held by some of our own countrymen not only against this colony, but even against England itself."
