Sоurce: Letter tо the Grаnd Duchess Christinа оf Tuscаny. From Discoveries and Opinions of Galileo: Translated with an Introduction and Notes by Stillman Drake To the Most Serene Grand Duchess Mother: Some years ago, as Your Serene Highness well knows, I discovered in the heavens many things that had not been seen before. The novelty (newness) of these things...in contradiction to the physical notions commonly held among academic philosophers, stirred up against me no small number of professors—as if I had placed these things in the sky with my own hands in order to upset nature and overturn the sciences. . . Showing a greater fondness for their own opinions than for truth, they sought to deny and disprove the new things. To this end they hurled various charges and published numerous writings filled with vain (worthless) arguments, and they made the grave mistake of sprinkling these with passages taken from places in the Bible which they had failed to understand properly. . . Persisting in their original resolve (determination) to destroy me by any means they can think of, these men are aware of my views in astronomy and philosophy. They know that as to the arrangement of the parts of the universe, I hold the sun to be situated motionless in the center of the revolution of the celestial orbs while the earth revolves about the sun. . . QUESTIONS: 1. According to this document, how does Galileo believe the planets are organized in the universe? 1. According to Galileo, what are some reasons people opposed his opinion? Your answer must be in your own words- do not use direct quotes. Your answer must be a minimum of 75 words.
Sоurce: Mаrtin Luther, 1517. Luther wrоte tо the Archbishop of Mаinz protesting the sаle of indulgences to finance the building of a new cathedral. Papal indulgences for the building of St. Peter's are circulating under your most distinguished name…I grieve over the wholly false impressions which the people have conceived from them-- the unhappy souls believe that if they have purchased letters of indulgence they are sure of their salvation (life after death with God), that so soon as they cast their contributions into the moneybox, souls fly out of purgatory (where souls go to be "cleansed" after death); furthermore, there is no sin too great to be absolved, that a man is free, through these indulgences, from all penalty and guilt… For this reason I have no longer been able to keep quiet about this matter, for it is by no gift of a bishop that man becomes sure of salvation… it is the first and the sole duty of all bishops that the people should learn the Gospel and the love of Christ, for Christ never taught that indulgences should be preached. How great then is the horror, how great the peril of a bishop, if he permits the Gospel to be kept quiet, and nothing but the noise of indulgences to be spread among his people! QUESTIONS: 1. What were the objections Luther had towards indulgences and their use by church officials? 2. According to this document, why did Luther challenge the Catholic Church? Your answer must be in your own words- do not use direct quotes. Your answer must be a minimum of 75 words.
