Stоry Prоblem: Hаzаrdоus mаterials handling procedures training for firefighters has become increasingly important, as well as increasingly expensive. My colleague and I were invited to develop and evaluate web-based training materials to replace the existing lecture-based approach. After an extensive development period, we implemented and tested the online training program, which, if successful, would be adopted for firefighters across the 12-state Midwestern region. Because all firefighters were required to complete annual certification, we anticipated a representative sample. We obtained permission to collect data from firefighters in Lincoln, Nebraska, and were provided with a complete roster of 240 firefighters. We stratified the list by gender and rank and randomly selected 40 individuals to represent those combinations; all selected participants were completing the certification test for the first time. Although we recognized the importance of random assignment, we were constrained by the Fire Captain’s requirement that firefighters within the same station receive the same training format. Therefore, we randomly assigned Stations 1–7 to the lecture condition and Stations 8–14 to the web-based condition. The lecture group received instruction on June 18, while the web-based group completed training on July 24 due to network difficulties. As a control measure, all participants completed the same national certification exam on July 25. Data from the 32 firefighters who completed their assigned training and the certification exam were analyzed. Results indicated consistently higher scores among those who completed the web-based training. Although all women in the sample were in the web-based condition, we determined this did not pose an interpretive concern because assignment occurred at the station level through randomization. Overall, the findings suggest that the web-based training program produced higher certification scores than the traditional lecture-based approach.
