Questions
Prоmpt: Fоr this first writing exercise in оur clаss, pleаse compose а brief essay (around 500-700 words) that does two things: Tells the story of your experiences with reading and writing—how they’ve shown up in your life, shaped you, or frustrated you. Reflects on what your story reveals about the role of literacy in people’s lives more broadly. Some ways to get started: earliest memories of reading/writing, kinds of texts in your home, contrasts with your parents’/grandparents’ literacy, or experiences that changed how you think about reading and writing. After you’ve told your story, step back: what can your experience teach us about the role of reading and writing in our human lives? “Don’t freak out” note The whole purpose of this project is just to get you putting some real words down very early in this writing class, to help me start to understand your story, who each of you is, and to familiarize me with your strengths and struggles as a writer. That is, it’s to establish a baseline. Don’t allow yourself to be paralyzed by the blank page or fear of not doing it “right.” Just respond to the prompt as best as you can.
