One of the shots from Art’s rifle struck Carl in the shoulder and disabled him. All of the commotion associated with the ongoing gunfire led Doug, a farmhand who worked for Carl, to rush to the scene with his own rifle. As Carl came into his view, he saw Art running towards his now disarmed and bleeding boss. Doug then took aim at Art and fired two shots directly at his legs.
