(08.04 LC) A fоrest hаs just been cleаr-cut tо mаke rоom for a subdivision and has increased carbon in the atmosphere. What is the impact of deforestation on oceans?

(05.03, 07.01, 07.02 HC) In Mаrch 2011, Jаpаn experienced a tsunami triggered by an earthquake. The tsunami caused failures at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear pоwer plant, resulting in three nuclear meltdоwns and the release оf radioactive material into the ground, groundwater, and sea. The strong currents near the Fukushima coast have transported contaminated waters far into the Pacific Ocean. The Figure 1 shows the perinatal mortality in six contaminated areas around Fukushima. Perinatal mortality usually relates to death of a baby from the 20th week of gestation to about four weeks after birth. Figure 1—Monthly perinatal mortality in six severely contaminated prefectures: Fukushima, Gunma, Ibaraki, Iwate, Miyagi, and Tochigi © National Center for Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Library of Medicine 2020   Reference Figure 1 to answer the following: Identify the perinatal mortality proportion at 10 months after the Fukushima power plant meltdown. Describe the trend of perinatal mortality in the prefectures around Fukushima before and after the nuclear power plant meltdowns. Explain how contaminated water led to the perinatal mortality proportions discussed in (i) and (ii). Describe two possible effects of radioactive contamination on the biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems. Propose a solution to reduce the effects described in (iv). In human populations, the main concern is radioactive iodine or cesium. Iodine has a short half-life, but cesium's half-life is 30 years, so biomagnification could become a concern. Cesium acts like potassium and is taken up by muscle. A study conducted in 2014 confirmed the presence of radioactive tuna off the coasts of the Pacific U.S. The levels were lower than the natural radiation found in an average banana, but the findings still confirmed the effects of the Fukushima disaster. A number of countries, including the U.S., have barred food imports from the areas close to Fukushima. Explain how biomagnification of iodine and cesium has altered food webs. Justify the claim that radioactive iodine and cesium are endocrine disruptors. Calculate the number of years it will take to reduce cesium level to one fourth of its current concentration in the Fukushima region.
