Germаny’s [BLANK-1] (literаlly the stаbbed-in-the-back myth) is an example оf the destructive pоtential оf misinformation and conspiracy theories. This myth, embraced by Adolf Hitler and other German nationalists of the interwar period, incorrectly claimed that Germany was on the verge of winning World War I, but was betrayed by the “November Criminals:” Jews and socialists. Despite the ridiculousness of the claim, this myth gained traction, both helping Hitler and the Nazis rise to power as well as contributing to anti-Semitism. This “fake news” helped contribute to Germany’s motivations for World War II.
