These and other religious leaders, known as [BLANK-1], embodied the move to evangelical religion during the Second Great Awakening. They critiqued the Protestant mainstream and moved beyond the accepted boundaries of contemporary Christianity. This idea created a shared ownership of loving relations and of the family (children were raised by the community rather than the individual). Jealousy and attachment were, theoretically, abandoned as each adult could enjoy the sexual company of whichever member of the opposite sex they wished.
