A direct smear is performed immediately and the MLT reports “gram negative intracellular diplococci present.” The MLT has two STAT chemistries, so she places the specimen in the refrigerator until she has time to setup the culture, which is not STAT. At 2:53 AM the technician removes the specimen and inoculates to BAP, Chocolate & MTM. After 24 hrs. of incubation, there is no growth on any of the plates. The movement found its leader in the charismatic former actor, Ronald Reagan, who harnessed popular distrust of regulation, taxes, and bureaucrats to win two terms as president in the 1980s.
